EUGENIO MONTALE READING KARL LÖWITH:
FROM CRITICA DELL'ESISTENZA STORICA TO SATURA*

In his essay "Pour présenter Eugenio Montale" Gianfranco Contini affirms that Montale's poetry is the product of "une véritable saturation culturelle"1. Undoubtedly Montale's readings exerted a seminal influence on his work. A host of studies have demonstrated more or less convincingly how his poetry was effected by various verse texts. However, with some notable exceptions, critics have tended to afford rather less attention to the immense debt Montale's poetry owes to non-verse texts2. In "Intenzioni (Intervista immaginaria)" (1946) the poet responds to an "imaginary" question in the following manner:

Non mi fraintenda, non nego che un poeta possa ο debba esercitarsi nel suo mestiere, in quanto tale. Ma i migliori esercizi sono quelli interni, fatti di meditazione e di lettura. Letture d'ogni genere, non letture di poesie: non occorre che il poeta passi il tempo a legger versi altrui, ma neppure si concepirebbe una sua ignoranza di quanto s'è fatto dal punto di vista tecnico, nell'arte sua...E naturalmente il grande semenzaio d'ogni trovata poetica è nel campo della prosa. [...]
