LA MONACA DI MONZA: MANZONI'S BAD GIRL AND THE
REPUDIATION OF THE IMAGINATION

Alessandro Manzoni's depiction of Gertrude, the monaca di Monza in I promessi sposi, has attracted and repelled critics and artists alike on account of her sexual repression and depravity1. A critical rereading reveals this tale as an interpretive key to the aesthetic and philosophical aims and conflicts of the novel, as well as to Manzoni's concerns about the historical novel, the genre which he introduced to Italian literature. This hermeneutic approach to the novella of the nun of Monza must be considered in the greater context of the novel. I promessi sposi, which juxtaposes the personal stories of Renzo and Lucia, the humble lovers of the title, with the cataclysmic events of the day (History) has been interpreted as a metaphor of Italy's quest for national unity2.
