As one might expect, Jorge Luis Borges' Historia de la eternidad (History of Eternity) exploits a temporal oxymoron. While eternity cannot become historical without denying itself, human experience gains permanence only when it transcends history itself. Since the dawn of time, attempts at reconciling mortality with immortality often have led the human mind to blend historical facts with wishful thinking. A case in point, the Renaissance came of age when it set out to draw pagan antiquity and medieval Christianity into a cultural synthesis somehow immune to the travails of growth and decay. [...]
