ZENO COSINI, AN ITALIAN NOVELIST?

Did Schmitz create Svevo who in turn created Zeno, or, conversely, was it Zeno who created Svevo who then created Schmitz? This question, almost a tongue-twister, is posited by Giovanni Palmieri in his new edition of La coscienza di Zeno1Schmitz, Svevo, Zeno. Storia di due biblioteche2. Surely the first reaction upon encountering another edition of La coscienza di Zeno would be one of astonished bewilderment. To my knowledge there are at least six editions and at least four glossed volumes of La coscienza. The first to appear on the market was the 1969 Dall'Oglio edition compiled by Bruno Maier. For many years this has been considered the ineludible and necessary referent for those wanting to systematically analyse La coscienza di Zeno. However, this seemingly unchallenged landmark owed the monopoly on Svevo's novel more to legal matters than to its accuracy. Until 1985 Dall'Oglio's publisher was the sole repository of Svevo's copyrights. In 1985, the dissolution of the copyrights coincided with a rush for the publication of the "best" edition of Svevo's third novel. [...]
