At first reading Giose Rimanelli's Biglietto di terza1 appears to be a collection of 37 objective yet introspective mini episodes about the author's maiden voyage to Canada, in 1953, to visit there his recently transplanted family. These episodes — initiating with requests from the mother for his coming, his travel aboard a ship filled with immigrants from Italy's Mezzogiorno, his contacts with the Italian community in Montréal and elsewhere — though vividly narrated, are independent from one another, and at the same time linked together by a common denominator: the Author as writer and the book's main character.
