Abstract:
While the sonnets of the Petrarchan discourse receive continuous critical attention, mechanisms used to bind sonnet sequences into integrated works of fiction remain unexamined. Suggesting contradictory characterization of the speaker as one such mechanism, this essay examines the way Petrarch uses autopoetics to create a complex and ambiguous first-person voice for his Il Canzoniere capable of pivoting the reader’s interest.

Key-words:
Sonnets, characterisation, ambiguity, narrative, autopoetics
