In 1915, Guido Gozzano wrote a brief article based on an episode of what was generally discussed, at the time, as the "Great Indian Mutiny" of 1857. From May to September of that year, almost all of Northern India was swept by a series of uprisings initiated by the Indian sepoy soldiers in the Bengal army2 with often the support of the local population, against British rule. Gozzano's piece, entitled "L'Olocausto di Cawnepore", describes some of the events which took place in the station of Cawnpore (Kanpur)3 between June 4 and July 15, 1857, pitting the rebel sepoys against the British officers and civilians.
