Of the 232 sonnets comprising Ser Durante's2 poem Il Fiore,
one in particular enjoys a reputation beyond the confines of
that particular text. Sonnet 97, "Chi della pelle del monton
fasciasse"3, constitutes a model for imitation by at least one other poet of the late Due- and early Trecento, Bindo Bonichi (ca. 1260-1337). Bonichi borrows and slightly alters the first four verses of Durante's lyric, rewriting entirely the subsequent ten lines to suit his own artistic exigencies. [...]
