Most commentators on the work of the contemporary writer Gianni Celati concur in drawing a clear distinction between the fictional works he published during the 1970s (from Comiche in 1971 to Lunario del paradiso in 1978) and those of the late 1980s (from Narratori delle pianure in 1985 to Verso la foce in 1989). In the seven years of silence between these two phases, Celati, all critics agree, went through an intense period of withdrawal and reflection before returning to publish Narratori delle pianure to warm critical acclaim.
