MARITALIS AFFECTIO AS A HAPPY ENDING? (DECAMERON V, 1)
ROBERTA RICCI

Abstract:
In this study I will first examine the debate over the origin and significance of divinely inspired art, as it is elaborated in antiquity and Christian texts. I will then argue how in Boccaccio’s treatment of sleep, the dialogue with the literary past and particularly Boccaccio’s own literary past occupies a space for re-thinking the importance of the visio corporalis as a necessary prerequisite to spiritual health and knowledge (visio spiritualis).

Key-words:
Love, beauty, visions, sleep, dreams, knowledge, (un)happy endings
