VICO WITH(OUT) CROCE
PINO PATELLA
Università degli Studi di Roma Due
My paper focuses on the difficulties created when we attempt to
interpret the thought of Giambattista Vico, and, in particular, his
aesthetics, with Croce. This is a difficult and ambiguous relation
because, while it is true that the fortune of Vico's thought is indebted above all to Croce's deserving work -- who in the last century played an essential role not only in promoting him by editing his major works, but also in making him known at an international level -- it is equally true that Croce's interpretation of Vico, often ideological and tendentious, has affected the
spread of Vico's philosophy, leaving a deep mark on the history of the reception of his thought.
In other words, when we interpret Vico today we are compelled to read it also with Croce, that is, we have to necessarily measure it with his strong interpretation, but this is precisely what creates problems and compels us to take our distances and read Vico without Croce. This ambiguous relation
becomes even more evident when we focus on Vico's aesthetics, on those doctrines of the sensitive and perceptive faculties that in the modern period he has contributed in elaborating, making a decisive contribution to the birth of the philosophical discipline of aesthetics.
