Abstract: The possibility of a critical approach to hermetic poetry involving an analogy with informale has attracted a number of critics of Italian poetry, most notably Stefano Agosti, Adelia Noferi, Silvio Ramat, and Oreste Macrì. Beyond the merits and technical difficulties of the terza generazone/informale analogy, such an approach inevitably raises the problem of abstraction as it applies more properly to the realm of poetry. Reframing the analogy, this essay addresses the subject of abstraction in hermetic poetry and offers another vantage point from which to consider the problematic status of the image and the complex interplay of the visual and verbal that characterize the poetry of the terza generazione.
