Abstract: This article examines the concept of "turning point" in Andrea Camilleri's Il giro di boa from the perspective of the development of the character of Montalbano and his increasingly hostile attitude towards contemporary society. Clandestine migration forms an essential part of Il giro di boa. Camilleri highlights the exploitation of children in order to reveal the bankruptcy of contemporary social values: the commodification of the most vulnerable by transnational organized crime. Montalbano's attitude towards children in general will be analysed to understand the moral stand he takes against uncaring and complicit Italians and their institutions. Il giro di boa is probably the most socially conscious of the Montalbano series to date; it represents an acute commentary on the oppressive nature of contemporary Italy. Key-Words: Camilleri, Il giro di boa, Montalbano, authenticity, child trafficking. |
