Abstract:
In many of her novels and short narrative Paola Masino uses her female protagonists' experiences to reflect on issues related to the private sphere, such as women's struggle against suffocating patriarchal expectations, their quests for selfhood and freedom, and the relationship between femininity and maternity. This article explores the representation of her female characters and the range of possibilities she creates for them. By revealing the restrictive roles patriarchal society assigns to women, Masino demystifies critical social institutions such as marriage, family and maternity, and challenges the sexual politics of Fascism.
