To read Calvino's Lezioni americane requires from the reader a good deal of intellectual curiosity and the potential for enchantment. As a matter of fact, those qualities naturally accompany the reading process of any of his books or texts. One of the French publishers of Calvino's books underscores that the author of The Invisible Cities was "prodigieusement intelligent"1. And this prodigious intelligence has produced a particular type of narration: light, rapid, precise, visible, multiple and, last but not least, consistent. Hence, the enchantment and magic that guide the reader and that underline Calvino's fascinating prose. To account for its qualities in a wider artistic context the best possible analogy would be Mozart's music. It is a phenomenon which may be best defined by such words as "graziosa", "giocosa", "allegra", "divina". | |
