Published between 1634 and 1636 (Croce, p. 468) the Cunto de li cunti, that is the Tale of Tales1, is probably one of the oldest and most complete fairy-tale collections in Italy. Although the work enjoyed a great success among contemporaries — in fact the first edition was followed by six others in quick succession (Burton, XI) — its popularity declined quite rapidly and by the end of the eighteenth century many scholars and most readers had forgotten it. Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm re-discovered the Cunto around 1812 and they spoke very highly of it in the appendix to their Kinder und Haumsmärchen published in 1822. Since then the Cunto de li cunti has encountered the favour of German and English readers because it was translated repeatedly into both languages (Croce, p. 466). [...]
