TOWARDS A "REFLEXIVE" GRAMMAR OF ITALIAN

Despite considerable research on the nature of grammatical rules and systems since the publication of Noam Chomsky's Syntactic Structures in 1957, growing numbers of linguists have become increasingly skeptical that the Chomskyan paradigm can ever adequately explain the conceptual richness of even a simple sentence. The purpose of this essay is to suggest that the notion of grammatical rule as it now stands is probably too narrow and too removed from the conceptual properties of discourse, and then to suggest ideas to make it more reflexive of these properties. These are put forward simply as targets for future discussion and work towards a reflexive grammar of Italian. [...]
